Margit Carstensen, a German actress, has passed away. Her representative said, citing the family, that she passed away on Thursday at the age of 83 in a hospital in Heide, Schleswig-Holstein.

Carstensen continued to appear on television in "Tatort - What it's worth living for" in 2016. She portrayed a peculiar trio of elderly women alongside Irm Hermann and Hanna Schygulla, in addition to Eva Mattes as Commissioner Klara Blum, who turn to murder for moral and ethical grounds.


Carstensen spent several years alone in a little town close to Heide. She was in terrible condition and hasn't been able to perform in parts for a while. Emphysema, which the heavy smoker had battled for years, made breathing challenging for her.


In Kiel, Carstensen was raised. Carstensen performed on several stages following her acting studies at Hamburg's Hochschule für Musik und Theater. From 1965 to 1969, she was a member of the Hamburger Schauspielhaus ensemble.


She relocated to Bremen in 1969, when she fell in love with flamboyant dramatist and director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. She co-wrote and co-directed movies including "The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant" (1972), "Martha" (1974), and "Chinese Roulette" (1976) with him.


Years of artistic cooperation also brought her into contact with Christoph Schlingensief, whose media productions "Terror 2000" (1992) and "100 Years Adolf Hitler - The Last Hour in the Führer Bunker" (1989) she appeared in as Magda Goebbels. She co-directed the 1999 ex-GDR comedy "Sonnenallee" with Leander Haußmann. For her lifetime's work, Carstensen received the Götz George Prize in Berlin in 2019.
