The much awaited 2023 update to its annual Journal Citation Reports (JCR) was just released by Clarivate Plc, a top source of reliable information and insights on a worldwide scale.
This highly regarded publication has over 21,500 outstanding academic publications from more than 250 fields of science and study. Only journals that fulfill strict quality requirements are included in the Web of Science index thanks to the selection process.
The yearly Journal Citation Reports have been a helpful tool for the global academic community for almost 50 years, guiding scholars in locating outstanding journals in their particular subjects. The reports include different metrics, such as the well-known Journal Impact Factor (JIF) and the Journal Citation Indicator, providing a thorough picture of a journal's importance.
The 2023 edition of JCR has enlarged the range of accepted journals, which is an important improvement. Prior to January 1, 2023, all Web of Science Core Collection journals that satisfied the strict quality requirements are now eligible to obtain a Journal Impact Factor.
With more than 9,000 journals from more than 3,000 publishers combined, the Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) and the transdisciplinary Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) are included in this extension. Researchers and academics will have easier access to reliable and excellent articles that have been screened by the Web of Science editorial team by expanding the list of journals covered. Only 15% of the journals that Clarivate's own experts examined achieve these strict quality requirements.
Notably, the JCR 2023 release brings about a change in the way the Journal Impact Factor is presented; it is now shown with one decimal point rather than three. With more connections between journals now possible, readers are encouraged to compare papers using extra metrics and descriptive information. The Journal Citation Indicator is highlighted as it is a standardized indicator that allows for easy understanding and cross-disciplinary comparisons.
Dr. Nandita Quaderi, Editor-in-Chief and Vice President of the Web of Science at Clarivate, expressed their commitment to providing transformative intelligence and trusted content. She noted, "The JIF was introduced in 1975 as a measure of scholarly impact and was restricted to journals in the sciences and social sciences. As fraudulent behavior has intensified in scholarly publishing, there is an increasing need for markers of trustworthiness. In this year's JCR release, we expand the JIF from only the most impactful science and social science journals to journals across all disciplines that have passed our rigorous quality evaluation. This means the JIF is now a reliable indicator of trustworthiness, as well as a measure of scholarly impact, at the journal level."
Emmanuel Thiveaud, Senior Vice President for Research & Analytics, Academia & Government at Clarivate, emphasized the company's commitment to research integrity. Thiveaud stated, "It is of paramount importance to us at Clarivate that our data in the Web of Science citation index and the JCR metrics derived from it are accurate and reliable for the purposes of research discovery and assessment. This year we have taken significant additional steps to foster research integrity in the Web of Science as we seek to uphold the highest ethical standards and proactively contribute to the maintenance of public trust in scientific and scholarly research."
Highlights from the JCR's 2022 statistics include more than 21,500 top-notch journals organized into 254 different study disciplines and representing 112 different nations. 13,668 science journals, 7,123 social science journals, and 3,248 journals in the arts and humanities are included in the breakdown. Notably, more than 5,600 journals publish all of their material as open access, emphasizing the expanding trend toward open intellectual communication. A astounding 9,136 journals have also been recognized for the first time with a Journal Impact Factor, demonstrating that they have met the strict assessment standards.
Each journal profile within the JCR provides an extensive range of journal intelligence metrics, empowering users to filter and rank journals by category. These metrics include the Journal Citation Indicator, which represents the average category-normalized citation impact for papers published in the previous three years, and the Immediacy Index, which measures the frequency of citations within the same year of publication. The Cited Half-Life metric signifies the median age, in years, of items in the journal that were cited during the JCR year. The Journal Impact Factor scales the citations received to recent content relative to the size of the journal's scholarly output.
In addition to these metrics, the Journal Citation Reports offer descriptive data, providing information on the availability of open access content, top contributing institutions, and regions. This comprehensive approach enables researchers and scholars to make informed decisions when choosing the most suitable journals for their work.
With the publication of the JCR 2023, Clarivate Plc underlines its commitment to advancing research evaluation and discovery while keeping the strictest standards of scientific integrity. The Journal Citation Report (JCR) seeks to offer an accurate assessment of a journal's reliability and academic effect by broadening the scope of the Journal effect Factor to include a wider variety of fields and offering a more nuanced presentation.
The yearly Journal Citation Reports are highly awaited by academic communities all around the world because they are a vital resource for navigating the complicated world of academic publication. With more than 21,500 high-quality journals now included in the JCR, researchers and academics have a priceless tool to find the most influential works in their disciplines and improve global scientific understanding.
