Twenty-four hours after a massive explosion blew up a four-story building in Marseille, in southern France, from Saturday night to Sunday, rescue workers recovered the first two dead in the wreckage, out of eight individuals feared missing...

"Two dead bodies" were recovered, according to a statement released by firemen just after 1 a.m. Monday. However, "due to the specific difficulties of intervention, the extraction (of the bodies from the site) will take time." The victims' bodies have yet to be recognized.

"Tonight, the pain and the pain are great," said Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan, who has been on the scene since the beginning to manage the operations. "We continue to do everything to carry out the rescue operations," he added, adding that "all of the City's services, accompanied by the State's services, are always, at this very moment, fully committed to further research." "There is still hope," he said, of finding "possible survivors."

Dominique Laurens, Marseille's public prosecutor, said earlier on Sunday that the rescue services were still seeking for eight persons who had gone missing.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, who was there on Sunday morning, has previously said that four to 10 persons may be trapped beneath the rubble.
