The British tourist board, VisitBritain, has created a new commercial to promote tourism in the United Kingdom, which plays on the tradition of the cup of tea: a different cup for each experience to be enjoyed in the UK.
The weirdest thing about the most renowned of English traditions, 5 o'clock tea, is that the Brits usually take it at 4 p.m., not at 5.
It doesn't matter because, according to the British tourist organization VisitBritain, you can drink a cup of tea whenever and wherever you want in the United Kingdom: on the street, in front of a mural, on a surfboard, at a festival, or near a Scottish lake - obviously with Nessie, the Loch Ness monster, in the background.
When you think of the British, you quickly think of red double-decker buses on London streets, Big Ben, and... mugs of tea». This is how the VisitBritain advertisement starts, a commercial based on the cliché of the sophisticated and courteous British man enjoying a cup of English tea (with his little finger raised).
Using fully cartoon visuals, VisitBritain's latest ad promotes tourism in the United Kingdom by playing on one of the most emotional cliches of English society: 5 o'clock tea. The protagonist, a gentleman of the nineteenth century, offers a range of activities that may be taken out in the United Kingdom, all linked by the tradition of a cup of tea.
As a result, the English cup of tea develops a format based on every unique English experience. There's a surf cup of tea for when you're out on the ocean waves, a graffiti cup of tea for when you're wandering around London to view some street art, and a giant haunting cup of tea for when you're looking for... Loch Ness monsters in Scotland.
An incredibly prominent ad, part of a wider 10 million pound campaign, that entirely overturns the notion of the high-class English guy by placing him in more opulent situations.
From the campaign, there is also merchandising of teapots dedicated to the numerous experiences stated in the commercial, which can be purchased on the VisitBritain website - likewise with a comic and cartoon-style cut.
The VisitBritain commercial has nothing to do with the provincial tourist commercials in Italy. Even though it isn't 5, now is an excellent time to try a monstrous haunting cup of tea. Then, whether the rumor is genuine or not, a great ride to Loch Ness remains an excellent summer choice.
