Government crisis in the Republic of Moldova: Natalia Gavrilita (Party of Action and Solidarity - PAS) unexpectedly resigned on Friday afternoon after one and a half years in power. Her resignation implies that her whole cabinet is leaving. President Maia Sandu directed her prior security adviser to create a government a few hours later.
Maia Sandu, the Republic of Moldova's pro-European President, accepted Gavrilita's resignation and promised urgent negotiations with political factions in order to be awarded the government mandate. She complimented Gavralita for her "enormous sacrifices and efforts" to rule the country "in times of so many problems".
New Prime Minister of Moldova
The next government's leader has already been named. Dorin Recean, Sandu's prior security adviser, now has 14 days to create a government and obtain a vote of confidence from the legislature. The 48-year-old Presidential Counselor also serves as the country's Supreme Security Council's interim Secretary-General. The PAS party, formed by President Sandu, has a solid majority in the Chisinau parliament (63 out of 101 seats), implying that the new head of government and his executive should be ratified without issue.
According to the Moldovan press, various ministers may be replaced by Gavrilita. On Friday afternoon, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu (PAS) guaranteed the selected head of government of the PAS faction's complete support, while opposition pro-Russian forces spoke out in favor of early elections.
The reason for the change of administration in Chisinau is unknown, especially because PAS MP Radu Marian only announced the reshuffle this morning, but it is likely to be tied to Russia's aggressiveness in neighboring Ukraine and the Kremlin's repeated threats towards Moldova.
Zelenskyj warned against Russian intervention in Moldova
Just one day before the commencement of the special EU meeting in Brussels, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj warned that Russia was going to take control of the Republic of Moldova. The Ukrainian secret service has acquired information regarding a thorough Russian plan to disturb the political situation in Moldova, which it has already notified the Moldovan President. The Russian paper demonstrates who, when, and how the Russian government intends to destabilize Moldova's democratic system and seize control of the nation, according to Zelenskyy.
