Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy S23 smartphone series, which also includes the Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra. The highlight of the product presentation at the Galaxy Unpacked event, held this Wednesday, January 1st, in San Francisco, California, was the cameras of the handsets, which got technical advances.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra, like the previous iteration, has a bigger 6.8-inch screen, a 5 mAh battery, and the integrated S Pen pen. The biggest difference is the quad camera main sensor, which has 200 MP as opposed to the previous generation's 108 MP. The gadget also contains a 12 MP wide angle lens, a 10 MP periscope telephoto lens, and another 10 MP telephoto lens, with a 10x optical zoom and a 100x digital zoom.

The cheapest models, the Galaxy S23, with a 6.1-inch screen, and the Galaxy S23+, 6.6 inches, both come equipped with three rear cameras: the main 50 MP, ultra-wide angle 12 MP and the 10 MP telephoto lens, with 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom. With them, it is possible to record in 8K and 30 frames per second.

Emphasizing the professional level of the Galaxy S23 Ultra's camera, Samsung announced, during the launch event, a partnership with two film directors, who recorded short films using only the device. The American Ridley Scott, from “Alien” (1979) and “Blade Runner” (1982), recorded a film called “Behold”. Already as a way to highlight the advances of Nightography, the night mode of the camera of the devices, Samsung called the  South Korean Na Hong-jin to make “Faith”, because the director has a darker and darker cinematographic language, with footage in spaces with low light.

Two new capabilities have been added to the device's native camera app. Expert Raw (Android) provides DSLR-style image recording and editing in RAW and JPEG from professional cameras. Another tool, Astrofoto, which was previously featured on Expert Raw, allows you to create time-lapses of stars in the sky as well as multiple exposure photos.

For the first time, the front camera of all smartphones in the range, 12 MP, has Super HDR, allowing for 4K and 60fps videos.

The Galaxy S23 range hasn't altered much on the surface. The gadgets now have a more simple design at the back, with no construction surrounding the cameras like the previous iteration. They contain a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU inside, which has 30% more capacity than the Galaxy S22.

All have the same AMOLED 2X Infinity-O FHD+ display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and a maximum brightness of 1750 nits. The S23 Ultra has the same 5 thousand mAh battery as the previous iteration. The batteries in the S23 and S3+ have been increased somewhat, to 3,900 mAh and 4,700 mAh, respectively.
