Rita Lee, a 75-year-old singer from Brazil, has been hospitalized to Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Jewish Hospital, the hospital and the artist's family said on Friday.
The singer's family stated in a message on the artist's Instagram account that hospitalization could be required for tests and assessments "as is the case with everyone who has had or is undergoing cancer treatment."
In 2021, Rita Lee received a lung cancer diagnosis. The singer said that the illness was thought to be in a state of remission in April of the following year. When admirers questioned the musician about cancer on her Instagram in July 2022, she said, "You have to have bravery."
She received the Musical Achievement Award in November during the Latin Grammy Awards event in recognition of her five decades of accomplishments and contributions to Latin American music.
Rita Lee, known as the "queen of Brazilian rock," has a distinguished musical background, having performed with bands like Os Mutantes and Tutti Frutti, two of the biggest names in tropicalismo and Brazilian rock, respectively. She produced more than 30 albums, including "Bossa N Beatles"—one of her final hits—revisiting songs by the renowned English band.
She collaborated on music with artists like Elis Regina and João Gilberto, authored books for kids, presented radio and television shows, and is a well-known advocate for animal rights.
