Biography
Manuel Agnelli began his career in 1985, when he co-founded the Afterhours band, which released its debut single, My Bit Boy, the following year. All the Good Childern, the debut album by the band he fronts, was released in 1986. Agnelli initially debuts on television in 1993, in a performance with the La Crus ensemble. He began working as a record producer with numerous musicians, including Patty Pravo, around the end of the 1990s.
After three English-language albums, the group's breakthrough comes with the 1995 album Germi, which is entirely in Italian and establishes the band as the unquestioned champions of the Italian alternative scene, a position that would stay unrivaled for the next three decades.
Hai dread of the dark (1997) and Non è per semper (1999) will come after, two works that continue in the footsteps of the preceding one, as evidenced by the lyrics, with the vocalist now purely speaking in Italian.
He was the inventor and organizer of the Tora! Tora! Festival, a multi-day music festival held in Rimini from 2001 to 2005. He traveled with the Afterhours throughout the United States and Canada in 2006. In Sanremo in 2009, the ensemble performed the song Il Paese è Reale, in which nineteen musicians from the Italian independent scene participated. In the years thereafter, he has collaborated, played, and dueted with a variety of musicians, including the Twilight Singers, Damo Suzuki, and Pacifico.`
In 2013, he co-founded the project Are you frightened of the dark?, which gets its title from the band's album of the same name, published in 1997, and is a cultural event that includes not only singers and musicians, but also cinema and theater performers. He was one of the X Factor judges in 2016, a role he was re-confirmed in all consecutive editions with the exception of the 2019 season, in which he elected not to participate.
