Beijing opposes strategic use and threats to use nuclear weapons, and it advocates for respect for all countries' sovereignty, as stipulated in the United Nations Charter.
On the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, China encouraged both sides to continue peace talks as soon as possible, emphasizing that nuclear weapons should not be utilized in this battle. This was stressed in a paper dubbed a "peace plan."
"All parties should encourage Russia and Ukraine to work together and begin direct engagement as soon as feasible," the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated in its 11-point policy to find a "political solution" to the crisis.
They rejected the use of nuclear weapons in the context of this military battle from Beijing, just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared his withdrawal from a nuclear disarmament accord with the US.
"Nuclear weapons should never be used, and nuclear wars should never be waged. "The threat or use of nuclear weapons must be rejected," according to the paper.
Similarly, the text emphasizes the duty to protect civilians: "The parties to the conflict must strictly adhere to international humanitarian law and refrain from attacking civilians or civilian installations."
China has attempted to present itself as a neutral party in this war since February 24, 2022, while maintaining connections with its strategic partner Russia. He did, however, offer Putin diplomatic and financial support while avoiding any military involvement or sending lethal weapons.
Wang Yi, the director of Chinese diplomacy, met with Putin and his foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, in Moscow on Wednesday to deliver his "political solution" to the war.
