Storm Gérard has been pounding the west of the nation for a few hours, particularly Brittany, where Météo-France has reported significant gusts of wind. Bad weather has caused tree falls in various departments, including Morbihan.

"At 3 a.m. legal, there are very powerful gusts on the islands and exposed capes of Finistère: 158 km/h at the Pointe du Raz, 135 km/h at Ouessant, 148 km/h at the island of Groix," Météo-France reports in its latest bulletin.

"We see 125 km/h at St Nazaire, further south. Inland, we saw 101 km/h in Le Horps (Mayenne), and 95 km/h in St Hilaire's Orne ", the meteorological agency says.

"The rainy body of the disturbance has now arrived in the Centre-Val-de-Loire, leaving a trail of showers over Brittany and Normandy. The low pressure area is gradually nearing the Cotentin ", Météo-France said in the middle of the night.

The Gérard downturn, though, is expected to fade by afternoon, according to the agency.

However, the storm will have an impact on various departments. In particular, the rail network in Normandy will be partially stopped on many lines this Monday owing to the severe wind orange vigilance issued by Météo-France.
