Hans Süper, a Cologne carnival icon, has died. According to his Facebook profile, the musician died over the weekend at the age of 86.

Hans Süper was a fixture on the Cologne stages for decades. Süper gained to notoriety as a member of the Colonia duo in 1974. He rose to prominence in the city and in the Süper-Duett. Everyone at the Cologne Carnival recognized the man on the Flitsch. He is claimed to have just died of liver cancer. After his fourth wedding, the remarkable artist could still be seen standing on the Alter Markt in September. Cologne and the carnival must now bid farewell.


Süper originally became renowned as "Colonia Duett" with Hans Zimmermann in 1974, and as "Süper Duett" with Werner Keppel in 1991. The mandolin, known as "Flitsch" in Cologne, was Süper's hallmark.


The revelers were in great spirits when Hans Süper glanced up at his buddy Hans Zimmermann and cheerfully named him "Zimmermän." Television watchers understood what was coming not just in the Cologne carnival halls, but also between Flensburg and Oberammergau: "Do Ei!"


Hans Süper first bid goodbye to the stage in 2004, but subsequently returned for solo concerts. In October 2016, he appeared on "Kölle sings" in front of 12,000 people at the Lanxess Arena.

Hans Süper had four marriages. His wife Helga died in April 2020, and he married his longtime girlfriend Lydia in September 2022. Süper just died of liver cancer.
