History of Muharram Festival: Why is it celebrated?
While some Muslims mark the month of Muharram as a day of sorrow, others choose to enjoy the festival of Muharram.
Muharram is observed by Muslims of the Shia and Sunni traditions for a variety of distinct reasons.
Shia Muslims mark a day of sorrow on the anniversary of the death of Husayn Ibn Ali, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, who was killed during the Battle of Karbala.
This day is celebrated by members of the Sunni faith as the day they prevailed against the King of Egypt.

Customary Fasting During the Month of Muharram
As a sign of respect for the holy day that is celebrated during Moharram, some Muslims choose to abstain from food and drink on either the ninth and tenth days of the month or only on the tenth day of the month.
Some people mark this day as a day of grief and cut themselves with a knife called Asura on the day of the sacrifice. This day is known as the Asura Day.
