Many days ago, the boat sailed away from Libya. Only four people were saved from the oil ship Alegria 1 when it arrived at the scene early this morning.
The central Mediterranean is once again the scene of a tragic play. The sinking of an overloaded boat that departed Libya few days ago is said to have killed at least 90 migrants in international seas. Only four people were rescued by the Alegria 1 oil ship this morning. It is estimated that there were roughly one hundred people on board the dinghy when it capsized, and that they were adrift for at least four days. For a few days, the Alarm Phone had been searching for a boat with roughly 90 passengers on board, but their efforts had come to nothing.
"Ignoring not only our offers of medical aid - denounces the MSF - but also the call not to return these individuals to Libya, where they will very definitely suffer incarceration, torture and cruelty," Alegria 1 is currently travelling towards Libya. According to the NGO, "take control of this effort and designate a safe spot for the surviving before it is too late" to Rome and Malta coordination centres. From MSF's perspective, "Frontex and the other EU organisations present in the region give the specifics of this unfortunate tragedy."
Using "enormous anguish and indignation" as a way to describe "catastrophic proportions" for the ninth shipwreck in the central Mediterranean is Sea Watch. A tweet from Mediterranea states that "the four survivors now face the possibility of being unlawfully repatriated to Libya, and Alegria 1 must bring them to the closest safe haven as quickly as possible."
