The actor Johnny Depp has taken the stand in his defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, which is expected to last for 50 million dollars.
“I wanted to stand up for my family, my children. My goal is the truth because it killed me that people that I had met over the years would think that I was a fraud. That I had lied to them.”Johnny Depp tells the jury
He claims he has never hit a woman in his life and has recounted how people's opinions about him have altered as a result of her op-ed being published in the newspaper.
Lawyers defending Depp's ex-wife, who happens to be an actress, have accused her of putting on "the show of her life" in her accusations of alleged domestic violence.
His attorney then asked him to detail his upbringing in Kentucky, as well as the abuse he had undergone at the hands of his mother.
“It’s been six years of trying times – so strange when one day you’re Cinderella, so to speak, and then in 0.6 seconds, you’re Quasimodo,” Depp tells the jury
Depp's old therapist as well as medical professionals who treated him when he was detoxifying himself from opiates have all testified before the jury over the course of the trial.
The trial is anticipated to run at least six weeks, and thus far, jurors have heard opposing descriptions of Mr Depp and Ms Heard's relationship from both sides of the table.
Ms Heard is also likely to testify at a later stage in the proceedings.
